Hair Conditioner problems

by Rachel
(CT (surrealistt@gmail.com))

I have thick, wavy hair. I have to use conditioner to get all the knots out, but I have found that most conditioners cause many pieces of my hair to fall out. What should I do?

I use only one conditioner - the Peppermint Herbal Conditioner from Made from Earth. I dont need to use anything else - I apply the conditioner and let it sit on my hair while I shower. After that I comb out my hair and rinse, voila I'm done and my hair is soft and moisturized.

I am concerned about parabens and chemicals so I use the Made from Earth Peppermint conditioner as a substitute for many things in the shower. I use this instead of shaving creams always, my legs, and arm pits are grateful. I am big on exfoliating and in winter after I shower, I add baking soda to the Made from Earth conditioner and apply it all over my body in a circular motion (paying attention to elbows, knees, hands, and feet) then do my final rinse. I do this once a week and I follow with shea butter or Extra Virgin Olive oil and this keeps my extra dry winter skin super soft, without chemicals and parabens. And it smells great, so no need for body sprays afterwards.

Hope this helps.

Okay, I'm going to be a little more technical here.

When you shampoo your hair, you're breaking up the build up that is on your scalp and hair shaft. If you are using your fingernails you are scratching the hair follicle. In return your hair that "naturally" sheds is coming up and out of the hair follicle, but because of the hair buildup (whether it's gel, hairspray, pomade, or natural hair oils) it's not falling out immediately. When you rinse your shampoo some of it will fall out. When you apply the conditioner, in most cases we run our fingers through our hair.. right? What that's doing is letting that hair (that came out of the follicle) come out easier. So, it comes out with the conditioner b/c the conditioner provides a slippery surface making it easier. If you notice the shampoo usually makes a rougher surface.
So, again, shampoo and conditioner doesn't "make" your hair fall out, conditioner makes it easier to come out after shampooing.

Now, shedding is normal, 50-100 strands a day is normal. If you shampoo every other or every 3rd day it's going to look like more. If you feel your hair is falling out more then "normal" and you've ruled out all the other possibilities. You will need to see your doctor.

Some of the possible reasons for hair loss are Stress, hormone change, excessive heat, poor eating habits, poor hygiene, lack of diet and exercise, excessive weight loss or gain, using products that are not for your hair type, excessive chemical treatments (ex: perms, color, relaxers, etc), over straightening with an iron, environment... Those are some! There are so many reasons your hair falls out. When it does it's almost always in the shower, but it's actually falling out through out the day, you just don't see it until you shampoo and condition it.

I hope this helps you all a little better.
I will be happy to answer any additional questions or concerns.
So, whatever the product(professional or store bought) make sure it's specifically for your hair type.

Thanks again!
Kennedy!

the answer is definitely not that simple.

ok, I've used every product under the sun, expensive, drug-store, salon-exclusive, free samples, whatever. I've noticed over the years that when I use conditioner I see way more hair in the drain stop then if I just shampoo my hair and leave it. This has been a lifelong observation. There must be more to it then using a "better" shampoo and conditioner, because I've also used kerasilk and aveda. The exact same results are produced every time. What's up with that?

Conditioner doesn't make your hair fall out.. That being said use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner like Goldwell's Kerasilk Ultra rich or Aveda's Damage Remedy which can be found on our homepage in our product store.
When using a good shampoo and conditioner you also need to comb your hair with a wide tooth comb or pick starting at the ends of your hair and working your way up to the scalp.
Hair falls out for many reasons: stress, pregnancy, excessive weight loss or gain, being unhealthy...etc. So if any of these are a factor trying fixing that first.
If your hair continues to fall out you should see your doctor.
