Lightening already dyed dark hair

by Kelly
(Philadelphia)

I naturally have blah brown hair and have (professionally)colored/highlighted it blonde, black, reddish etc. Currently my hair is colored a dark reddish brown and I want to lighten it to a caramel, light brown/dark blonde highlights. I can not afford a professional job currently...ANY ADVICE I can do myself???? Thank you!!

I'm not one to recommend doing hair at home, but given the times, I'd rather you have good advice then just risking it.
Any time you have any shade of red in your hair, it can get tricky. You never know what underlying pigments are going to show through. So beware that anything can happen.
If you want just highlights of a carmel/lightbrown/dark blonde color. The easiest thing for someone doing highlights at home is getting a cap and pulling your hair through,(I only use foils and have never used a cap, but caps are easier for those doing it at home) adding hair bleach(make sure the hair is saturated), leave the bleach in about 15-20 minutes. Check it by wiping a small section to see what shade it is, if you like what you see take it out. If not, wait another 5 minutes and check again.
When you take it out, you'll rinse the bleach with the cap still on, shampoo and rinse. Then remove the cap and shampoo again, rinse, and condition.
If it turns out lighter/darker then you wanted wait a few days to see how it will look. The color will change within the week.
You can buy the bleach and developer at Sally's if you have one near you.. If not you can get a box that highlights your hair from the grocery store. I can not stand behind anything from the store b/c I've never used it. I hope it works out for you.. Anymore questions, please ask!

Thanks
