Radiation to my head

by Mary Stovall
(Hampton, VA. U.S.A.)

I had radiation to my head for a tumor 6 months ago, and now my hair has gone berserk.

I was told not to do any perms or color treatments for at least a year. OK, I can understand that.

But, you see I was already a little gray, kinda salt & pepper look. The radiation has sped it up, my hair is dry & brittle. I look like a straw head, and fly-aways/split ends from hell.

Can any one suggest what I can do to help my hair? I mean I haven't loss any hair (yet)?! My look is beyond the bed head look. ugh!!

First off, I hope they got everything and you don't have to go through anything like that again.
As for your hair, they recommend no color or perms because of the chemicals. When you mix the radiation and other types of chemicals together you can get a negative reaction. This will cause the hair to react differently to the color or perm. Ex:brown color turning black or not even coloring the hair at all; with perms it may not take well or the hair that had radiation might fall out.
So, it is an important thing not to use any chemicals during the first year, your hair needs that time to make sure the radiation is gone from the hair.
What you can do in the mean time is use a good moisturizing shampoo and conditioner like Aveda's Damage Remedy (you can find it in our hair store.
Damage Remedy will help add protein and keratin back into the hair leaving it healthy, silky and shiny. Also, try adding an extra 5 minutes to your hair routine trying out different styles using a round brush to add volume. This will help you feel better about your hair while you wait to color it! You could also try going to the salon and get a new cut to make you feel better too!
Good luck and post back to let me know how your doing!
Thanks
