red to strawberry blonde hair question

by deedee
(uk)

I have naturally light red hair. In the past I used a home box dye kit in a light blonde colour with what I think was a 20 vol developer (it had 6% printed on the back of the bottle) I'm about to try a professional brand by buying the colour and develeper seperately. I bought a 10G lightest golden blonde with a 20 vol developer...will this lighten my light red hair to a strawberry blonde? I don't want to lose the red so much as to just have it more sunkissed.

Thanks so much for replying!

My hair is like I said light red, but when I was younger it was very blonde so it's not a red that is dark if you see what I mean. I have almost no colour left in my hair now, it's practically grown out except for a bit on the ends. I was just hoping that I didn't have to use as strong developer with a light colour. It's Clairol pro creme colour 10G. I didn't go for the highlight because it stated that you need (like you said) a higher developer. And I only want to lift it slightly. I used to use Umberto Giannini All Over gold which seemed to give my red hair a sunkissed look, contrary to what many hairdressers have told me about how red hair won't lighten properly. I don't really dare go up to a 30 volume as I want a natural look and after seeing 6% on the back of a bottle I used to use I hope it will do roughly the same with a low developer and very light colour?

The only way to explain that is that color is not suppose to lift color. Bleach however will. (That's what they teach people) If your hair was "natural" before you used the home color, that is why it lifted it. If you have color on your hair now with regrowth, be careful because the regrowth may lighten and the hair with color on it may not. If it's the same from scalp to ends (with or without color) the hair should look the same from scalp to ends.
I personally think color can lift color, if you use 20vol or higher. So yes, using 20vol i think it's possible for you to see a slight change. If the 10G is a highlift color it will lift your color but you can only use 30 or 40 vol with it. Can i ask what brand you are using? That will help me assist you better with it.
What I meant by the highlights. Is that if you have a heavy highlight you can get the same effect of it all being lighter, but it would have dimension. If that's not what you want that's ok. I will still do what i can to help you with this and find the best way to go about it..

Thanks

So how does that explain my previously successful experience with lightening? I have considered going to a salon but find highlights on red hair quite unnatural looking! I don't want bits of blonde streaks here and there I want it all gently lightened. So you don't think that a 20 vol will lighten at all?

No, it won't do anything other then add damage.
Your best bet is to go to the salon and have them highlight your hair, only lightening it a little bit. It will give your hair more dimension and it will look better then all over color would.
